Grand Seiko announces a comprehensive update to the Evolution 9 collection, launching nine new models for 2026.



In the summer of 2026, Grand Seiko applied the Japanese concept of *Kodawari*—the pursuit of perfection through continuous improvement—to the Evolution 9 collection. Specifically, this involved upgrading existing models to align with the brand's recent innovations. It also provided an opportunity to harmonize disparate design elements found on individual watches, creating a more unified and cohesive Evolution 9 collection. Beyond these technical upgrades, the update introduces two brand-new dial colorways.

For clarity, we have categorized these nine models based on their movement types: Spring Drive and High-Beat.

Grand Seiko Evolution 9 UFA Spring Drive

The most significant technical upgrade for this series is the adoption of the 9RB2 UFA movement across all three-hand Evolution 9 Spring Drive models. For those unfamiliar, "UFA" stands for "Ultra-Fine Accuracy," denoting an annual precision rate of ±20 seconds. This makes it the world's most accurate mainspring-driven movement. It is a unique distinction, given that Spring Drive technology represents a specialized category of movement; it utilizes a traditional mainspring mechanism to power a quartz regulator, making it a hybrid movement rather than a purely mechanical or electronic one.

Five of the nine models—either upgraded versions or entirely new releases—feature the 9RB2 UFA movement. The upgraded models include the SLGB009 "White Birch," SLGB011 "Atelier Valley," and SLGB013 "Lake Suwa," all based on existing Evolution 9 models. The SLGB015 "Lake Suwa" is also technically based on an existing model—sharing the same dial design as the SLGB013—but introduces a new, more compact case size measuring 37mm in diameter and 11.4mm in thickness.

The fifth model is the SLGB007, a new dial variant within the Lake Suwa series, named "Night Lake." Like the blue-dialed 013 and 015 models, it features the same lake-surface texture, though the dial color transitions from a deep, brownish-black hue. Interestingly, it evokes the warmth of hot cocoa rather than a moonlit night by the lakeside—not a drawback, but rather a quality that adds a rich, inviting allure.

Another update to the Spring Drive models aligns their sapphire crystals with the rest of the collection. Previously, Evolution 9 Spring Drive models featured dual-curved crystals while the Hi-Beat models used box-shaped crystals; now, however, all models utilize box-shaped sapphire crystals. This change is particularly evident in the White Birch, Atera Valley, and Lake Suwa models.

Adjustments have also been made to case materials. The cases for all Spring Drive and Hi-Beat models have been upgraded to Grand Seiko’s proprietary Ever-Brilliant Steel, significantly enhancing corrosion resistance. Additionally, while some models have switched from titanium to steel, the new "Night Lake" model is crafted from titanium. Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Hi-Beat
The updates to the Evolution 9 Hi-Beat models are more subtle than those seen in the Spring Drive series. The most significant change—which applies to the entire collection and was discussed previously—is the switch from standard stainless steel to Ever-Brilliant Steel. Both the SLGH031 (White Birch) and SLGH033 (Green Birch) models feature this material. Ever-Brilliant Steel enhances corrosion resistance and overall durability, ensuring the watch retains its pristine, like-new appearance for longer.

A second change—an improvement shared across the entire Evolution 9 collection (and applicable to the Spring Drive models as well, though not previously mentioned)—is an upgrade to the clasp. All clasps are now equipped with a micro-adjustment system, allowing for easy fit adjustments on the fly. Given the current hot weather in the UK, this feature is particularly practical for the wearer. This is a significant upgrade to the wearing experience, befitting a high-end brand like Grand Seiko. For the SLGH029 "Night Birch" model, this represents the only change compared to the earlier SLGH017 "Night Birch."

The fourth and final Evolution 9 Hi-Beat model is a reinterpretation of a dial pattern—Genbi-kei—not previously seen in the existing collection. The dial features a crystalline texture inspired by the landscape of the Genbi-kei Gorge, evoking the imagery of murmuring waters, rugged rocks, and lush vegetation. While this texture was previously used on a 2024 limited-edition watch, the new model is a non-limited edition and features a dial with a blue-leaning hue, contrasting with the green tone of the original.
